Event Planning: 5 Tips to Plan an Engagement Party

How to plan the best party to celebrate your engagement or put on a party for your friend.

This is how I planned one for myself, however it will include tips for maids of honor to throw a party for the couple as well.

Now I am a wedding and event planner and coordinator, and I plan events mostly wedding related. I have coordinated over 20 weddings and a handful of other pre wedding events since I started in June of 2022. I absolutely love what I do and have so much fun with the couples I have worked with so I am so happy I can help you on your event planning journey. Here are a few tips for planning an engagement party.

Tip #1 - It's not about who shows up

This is the biggest mistake I have seen so far. The couple planning the party being worried if the guests will care about the food, the decorations etc. If you listen to any of these tips it should be this one. If you are inviting people to celebrate you as a couple getting engaged, the party should reflect you as a couple.

Don't go with the typical event food because that's what most people attending would be happy with. If your first date was to the fair, like mine was, you can have fair food as the food at your party, it makes it so much more personalized to you together.

At my engagement party I kept it extremely small with only family and a few friends.

Tip #2 - Pick a Theme and Colors

Our theme was on cloud 9 with white as the main color and pink accents. It's helpful to have a theme in my opinion, so it's not tacky with Mr. and Mrs. signs all over the place. I made clear balloons with stuffing inside to look like clouds. I had a cake that was pink to tie in the color with a cloud drawn on the center. And I had friends of mine wear pink as well.

Tip #3 - Have some Activity's

We took photos, ate some Mexican food, had a champagne tower and cut the cake. There's lots of other options as well for games like the nearlywed game where a guest asks your partner questions about you and see if they get it right, you can have yard games like cornhole or horseshoes and much more.

Tip #4 - Have a Timeline

I made a rough timeline because photos had to be done in a window of time where the sun wasn't to harsh! This is mine as an example.

Tip #5 - Enjoy it!

Enjoy your party! Designate a photographer or hire one so you don't need to worry about photos. Celebrate the couple that's getting married! We had such a nice time at our party and I hope yours is so much fun.

Thank you so much for reading this post! Congratulations and happy planning! You can check out my upcoming post about our weekend in San Diego, and the gallery from our engagement party!
